November Girl: Grunge Scorpios Taking on NYC Scene

What do you get when two Scorpios form a band? You get a DIY alternative rock band that evokes imagery of femininity, grunge, and an old-school rockstar meets the alternative punk aesthetic. The NYC-based band November Girl, made up of Willa Rudolph (singer/guitar), Billy Flanagan (lead guitar), Dylan Davis (bass), and Philip Brand (drums), brings influences from all eras but uniquely makes it their own. Their songs follow similar grunge and dark tones as bands such as The Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins, and No Doubt, including Willa’s ethereal melodic style of singing, forming a new sound.

November Girl is always planning the most iconic shows, from their latest “Great American Mud Wrestling Show” with performances from November Girl, Sofia Zarzuela, Homade, and Le Bang to their more recent “Pre Halloween Slaughter House” show where November Girl, GUN, AUX Blood, and Sofia Zarzuela dress up as iconic bands such as No Doubt, Limp Bizkit, Ramones, and Nirvana. November Girl is a band you need to see live! We got to chat with Willa to learn more about the band and their upcoming projects.

How did you come up with the name November Girl? (Any Scorpios or Sagittarius’ in the band?)

November Girl got its name from my birthday being in November and me being a Scorpio sun and rising sign. Myself and co-founder/lead guitarist Billy are actually both Scorpios. An old photo book, that was either called “November Girl” or said those words inside it, also spoke to me when I randomly came across it in a used bookstore in 2015. I didn’t buy it, but it depicted the subject so tenderly – dark, sensual, secretive... I love all things spooky and my band’s music always has an element of gloom, much like the month of November. But anyone can be a November Girl, you don’t have to be born in November. You could equate being a November Girl to being more “black cat” than “golden retriever”

How did November Girl come together?

Billy and I started it together. Dylan (bass) and Phil (drums) were both friends of mine who responded to my Instagram story that read, "WHO WANTS TO START A BAND?" hehe

In 5 words or less, how would you describe your music?

Grungy, yet articulate, sexy 90's rock. The 90s doesn't count as a word, it's numbers ;)

With your 90s-inspired grunge sound and style, who are some of your biggest influences?

As a singer/lyricist, I love Liz Phair, Hole, Mazzy Star, and The Breeders.

With your next single, Down Bitter, set to release at the end of the month, what can we expect from this new single?

This new single is grungy and builds and builds as it progresses. Down Bitter is about sex and power.

Your show back in June "Great American Mud Wrestling Show" started off the summer with a bang, got anything planned to top it off at your “Pre Halloween Slaughter House” show?

The "Pre Halloween Slaughter House" show will not involve any mud wrestling. We debated "blood wrestling" with fake blood, but ultimately decided against it... FOR NOW.

Review of Pre Halloween Slaughter House show coming soon….
