If you took a James Bond girl but gave her a mic and a whiskey sour you will probably get Alexa Dark serenading you. Alexa Dark has grown up all over the world and has developed a unique sound. I asked her some questions about what influenced her dark feminine energy and what she plans to do next.
You are multicultural, how has each country you've lived in influenced your music, style, and taste?
Experiencing different cultures and cities firsthand at a young age really shaped me and my love for music. From the indie rock music scene in London that got me on my first stages, to the French films and style I grew to love while spending time in Paris, I was exposed to styles of music, fashion, and films I might have otherwise never heard of, and that has become a huge part of who I am as an artist.
What led you to move to NYC?
I was born in New York, and have always felt a real connection to the city. I moved back for college and started getting involved in the music and art scenes.
'Cool for you?' is quite vulnerable. Is it about someone specific?
There was someone in my life that led me to write ‘Cool for You.’ But as the song evolved, it really became more about myself than anyone else, and I think a lot of my vulnerability in the song comes from that.
What has been the response like to Dark, Vol I?
It’s been so great. It was such an amazing experience to bring the music, the visuals, and the whole world that was in my head to life, so I’m thrilled when people tell me it’s resonated with them.
Will there be a VOL II? And if so, will it be darker?
Haha, well I’ve been working on a lot of new music that I’m really excited about. Definitely the beginning of a new chapter that’s pretty dark, so…maybe…
What inspired your dark and moody aesthetic?
Since I was a kid, I was always very intrigued by films, books, and music with a more melancholic tone and darker edge and aesthetic...I guess I’m still that moody kid at heart, more interested in the darker, shadowy sides of people and life.
How do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music?
I always wish to create a world with my music that immerses the listener in a sort of parallel universe for the length of the song or album. I’d like the audience to feel however they want to feel in this space we meet in - explore whatever emotion arises, be whatever version of themselves they want to be.
What are some of your musical influences?
So many. But to name a few: Nancy Sinatra, Portishead, Serge Gainsbourg, Amy Winehouse.
Alexa Dark's 'Dark, Vol. 1' is now on all streaming platforms. You can follow her on Instagram to stay in touch with all possible tour dates. In the meantime, wear black, break men's hearts, and have a martini, kid. Alexa is not going anywhere.
